Is the property you're renting used as a home (residential), or for a business or commercial purpose?

Lebanese rental law has completely separate frameworks for residential and non-residential leases, and the rules on rent increases differ significantly between the two.

Based on what you told me. Lease type: residential · Lease signed: after July 23, 1992

No. Your landlord cannot unilaterally raise the rent while your fixed-term lease is still running.

Because your lease was signed after July 23, 1992, it is not covered by the old rent-control regime (Law 160/1992), which applied its protective multipliers only to pre-1992 regulated leases. Your lease is governed by the Code of Obligations and Contracts under general contract law.

There are only two situations where a rent increase during your lease is lawful:

  1. 1An escalation clause in your contract. If you signed a clause explicitly permitting the landlord to increase rent at set intervals, that clause is enforceable because you consented to it when you signed.
  2. 2Your written agreement. If you and your landlord mutually agree in writing to a new rent, that amendment is valid.

Outside those two cases, a landlord who insists on a mid-lease increase is in breach of contract. You are entitled to refuse and hold them to the original rent for the remainder of the term.

What to do next

  • Review your lease for any escalation or rent-review clause before responding.
  • Send a written response stating you are bound by the agreed rent under the original contract.
  • If pressure continues, consult a tenancy lawyer promptly.

Six things it can do without you leaving the conversation

  • Answer a real questionIn plain language, from Lebanese law rather than from guesswork.
  • Show its sourcesThe specific articles and decisions the answer rests on, every time.
  • Pull the text of an articleName one and get the source text, unedited.
  • Give you the stepsWhat to do, in what order, with what documents.
  • Find you a lawyerFrom the vetted directory, when a question needs one.
  • Say what it doesn't coveronly askLexWhere the sources don't settle a point, it says so, and tells you what would.

Not sure what to ask? Start here.

  • “I resigned after 4 years in Beirut. Am I owed end-of-service pay?”
  • “My employer let me go without notice. What am I entitled to?”
  • “My landlord wants to raise the rent mid-lease. Can they?”
  • “Who can help me with an employment dispute in Beirut?”

The difference

Your assistant already has an opinion about Lebanese law. That's the problem.

Same question. Flip the switch.

My landlord wants to raise the rent mid-lease. Can they?

“Generally a landlord cannot raise rent mid-lease unless the contract allows it. Lebanese rental law is complex. You should consult a local lawyer.”

No articleNo law numberNever asks which kind of lease

First it asks: residential or commercial? Then: “No. Not while your fixed-term lease is running.” Signed after July 1992, so Law 160/1992 does not apply. Two lawful exceptions, and what to send your landlord this week.

Sources you can check0One of these you can act on. The other you cannot.
  • Verified, not scrapedEvery source is checked by a Lebanese lawyer before it becomes usable.
  • Law as courts apply itNot only what the statute says on paper.
  • Arabic done properlyOne legal term can carry dozens of readings, and translation alone gets it wrong.
  • Scored before it reaches youEvery answer is rated internally. Below our threshold Lex does not improvise. It tells you it cannot settle the point, and points you to a lawyer.
